A REVOLUTION IN COMBATING MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY
AND A HOPEFUL OUTLOOK:
How patient’s emotional and mental state can contribute to having or combating disease.
If one accepts the idea that the mental and emotional state of an individual effects him physically, one may go on to consider how successful treatment that encourages the patient to partake in their own health can build self-confidence, instill a positive outlook on life and hope for a healthy, fulfilling future can combat diseases such as muscular dystrophy. Hope is a positive by product of successful treatment when combating disease.
The conventional approach to treating MD:
Standard medical practice has rooted the cause for MD with the enzyme aidolease, which causes a breakdown of protein or tissue. Physicians are able to trace the sequence of events, but they are unable to determine at what stage in this process the malfunctions occur that produce muscular dystrophy. Every drug and treatment has failed, such as steroids and Glucocorticord drugs that at best only delay the progression of the disease. Muscle insemination has proven ineffective, because the placed muscle tissue does not grow.
The Revolution: An alternative approach treating MD, with proven results:
Touch is the primary tool in treatment for the MD patient. It must do for him what he is at first too weak to do for himself. Therapeutic massage, a very gentle intuitive touch stimulates tired and weak muscles. It gets the blood flow back to the parts of the body that have been motionless.
Unlike standard physical therapy, the therapist administers movement, by moving the patient’s arms, legs etc. This procedure is called passive movement. This gives the MD patient the benefits of exercise to strengthen the muscles, without the physical strain that damages weaken muscles.
After the muscles have gained strength through passive movement the patient is ready for active movement, where the patient is able to move freely on their own. An assessment of good muscle tissue, not affected by MD is also detected. These healthy muscles also benefit from therapy and help aid the weaker muscles. Also, if muscle insemination has taken place the new muscle tissue would benefit and grow with passive and active movement.
This is the basic pattern of treatment; massage, passive movement and then active movement, gently and gradually increasing in intensity and duration. We have documented the use of this treatment in rebuilding atrophied muscles. An atrophied muscle is one in which normal fibers of the tissue have deteriorated and thins the muscles. Every MD patient treated by us has shown thickening and strengthening of muscle fibers that originally had been atrophied by muscular dystrophy.
Success with the Alternative approach:
Beatriz, a woman, in her mid-thirties was suffering from FSH (facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy). She was unable to eat, smile, close her eyes without pain and discomfort. She had tried conventional, mainstream rehabilitation but it wasn’t enough to reverse or even minimize her symptoms. Her disappointment with the therapies, and witnessing her wheel chaired bound mother’s battle with MD worsen over time led her to seek out alternative avenues for treatment. Beatriz heard about Meir Schneider’s success in overcoming blindness through self-healing, and as she began to investigate she learned that he also worked with people battling MD. In 1989, Beatriz traveled from Brazil to San Francisco for Self-Healing therapy. The next nine months would be intensive work with many hours of self-healing therapy sessions and daily self-massage. This included, massage, passive and active movement, repetitive exercises of stretching, breathing, and visualization.
Beatriz’s pain began to lessen followed by increased mobility. At the end of the ninth month, she estimated her health to be 40% better, then when she first entered treatment. She stopped tripping and falling. The feeling of weakness in her face subsided and allowed her to eat. She was able to lift her arms higher, from 90 degrees to 150 degrees. Her lower back did not hurt when she walked and her legs did not tire as quickly as they had prior to treatment. Her movement was more fluid, her breathing deepened thus allowing her to relax, to feel happier and improve her outlook on her life.
All these improvements in Beatriz’s health inspired her to become enthused with living again, and become active in her recovery. Beatriz on the benefits of Self-Healing, “I have learned how to stay in control of my health on a long term basis-to know my body’s needs and respond to them. I have discovered for myself that everyone has an innate power to create recovery and health.”
Beatriz has became a Self-Healing Practitioner/Educator, an assistant professor at the Federal University of San Carlos Brazil, where she co-founded Nucleus for Self-Healing, a clinic and research project which offers free Self-Healing therapy and classes to the community. Since 1993 she has been teaching workshops and Self-Healing training. Beatriz is currently a licensed occupational therapist with a private practice in California, and teaches Self-Healing in the U.S., Europe and Brazil.
Beatriz’s inspiring story is one of many stories that have become associated with practicing the Self- Healing method. However, more research and education is needed to continue this success. Further research can take the Self-Healing method to the next level of this revolutionary approach by educating occupational and physical therapist to further help people suffering from MD and give them hope. Please help raise public awareness.
There is a way to help those afflicted with muscular dystrophy regain better function, dignity and quality of life.
