Sometimes it seems that our thoughts have a mind of their own. They come uninvited, any time they feel like it, without a “By your leave”; without prior warning, no knock, nothing. And they move in, take over our mind; squatters, if you will. And the same thought repeats itself over and over and over again; must think a lot of itself! And we are powerless to interfere.
Well, here are a few suggestions:
Thoughts come in “episodes”; there’s usually a beginning, an end, a middle, and a climax or crescendo: a short movie, if you will.
OK, so let’s take an unwanted thought; any one at random: say you keep thinking that your favorite dog gets run over by the neighbor’s truck, right in front of your house.
So the movie is about 2-3 minutes long; starts off nicely, with Fido skipping merrily along the sidewalk in front of the house. Then, without warning, as your neighbor is turning the corner, late for the football game, Fido runs out into the street and BAM!
And you can’t get this thought out of your mind; it plays over and over, at random, unexpected times, throughout the day, and night.
So try this: as the neighbor turns the corner, just before Fido runs out into the street,
1) Click the pause button on the remote: freeze the scene, click the off button, blank the screen, get up and do something else, like get a glass of water.
or
2) Freeze the scene, make it into a still picture, change the picture to glass, take a hammer and shatter the glass into a thousand pieces and watch them fall to the floor.
Try both methods. Choose whichever of them is easier for you or feels better. Repeat until whenever the thought (movie) starts to play, it automatically freezes and goes blank or shatters by itself without any conscious effort on your part.
